October 2018 - News Freeze

Hi guys I just wanted to apologise that I haven't been sharing any news on here or adding more products to my online shop... & there has been a lot of news to share & lots of new work!! As a working mum (Jude is now 2&1/2 years old) I have 3 jobs: looking after little one, running 'Ada Gallery' my little boutique style gallery in Market Harbough www.adagallery.co.uk & making lots of my jewellery for the gallery & also commissions... so I'm a pretty busy girl & thus my website has been a little bit neglected :-(

So the plan of action is to share more of my jewellery news on here & my Facebook Ruth Wood Jewellery page & not just through the Ada Gallery news. Which I daily promote on Instagram ada_gallery Facebook AdaAdornments  & Twitter adagallery But bring you lots more pics of new work that is available to purchase & completed commissions. You will gradually start to see the my online shop fill up. There are lots of pictures waiting on my camera to share... Below are just a few pics to give you a feel of what I've been making recently :-) You are also welcome to join my Ada Gallery mailing list which I have merged together with my Ruth Wood one, to recieve current news via email, about the shop & my jewellery www.adagallery.co.uk/newsletter-subscribe

In 2019 you will also see the launch of the Ada Gallery website with online shop, selling work by up to 60 designer makers that we stock.

Wed 3rd July 2013 - Indian inspired Recycled Jewellery Workshop

In July this month I had a lovely day teaching an 'Indian inspired Recycled Jewellery workshop' at English Martyrs in Leicester. Teaching 2 groups of 18 Year 8 students. I was really impressed with how focused the students were on the workshop and it was really lovley to see them getting inspired from the Indian jewellery and pattern pictures I provided. All got fully involved with getting as creative as possible transforming their rubbish of paper, food packaging, catalogues, cartons, plastic bags, bottles, odd bits of costume jewellery & beads and so on into beautiful objects to be worn, from pendants, cuffs, necklaces, ear, hand & head pieces and hats. The aim of the day was to be as experimental as possible really playing with the materials they had, exploring craft skills to create exciting new jewellery.

The above images images are of some of the amazing work that they produced in just 2 hours! To see more photos of the students work & read their feedback from the day, click on the following link

May 2013 - Bilston Craft Gallery Exhibition

My Cave ring has been selected for the exhibition 'Storytelling: Once upon a time in the Midlands' Bilston Craft Gallery representing the 1940's unsolved murder story 'Who put Bella in the Wych Elm?' 25th May - 24th August 2013, Mount Pleasant, West Midlands.

"Have you heard of the polar bears that escaped from Dudley Zoo and roam the limestone caverns beneath Dudley Castle? Or what about the Anglo-Saxon King Wild Edric who sleeps beneath the Stiperstones in Shropshire with his army… it’s said they will wake and ride out to protect Britain if danger threatens the nation.

Explore some of the rich stories, folklore and urban myth of the Midlands brought to life through imaginative and magical works of contemporary craft. You’ll be intrigued by a varied range of objects including toys and automata, jewellery, glass and embroidery that illustrate local stories, whether humorous, romantic or mysterious. The exhibition includes many new craftworks created in response to some of these stories by makers and artists whose work is inspired by narrative and character."

August 2012

Just had a lovely meeting with a new stone supplier, Peter from Rubyfair my dog Ruby wouldn't leave him alone :-) Rubyfair is a British company with Tanzania partner that ethically mine rubies, sapphires, spinels and tanzanites.

"Do you really want your Ruby or Sapphire gemstone purchase to be supporting a corrupt regime or made from the misery of others or cause a detrimental effect to the environment?" Peter, Rubyfair

I think it is really important that we are thinking about where are materials are coming from and how they are made, with the impact on the enviroment! I do not want to be supporting child labour, unfair wages, terrible working conditions, enviromental damage etc. Rubyfair make sure the Tanzanian miners that work for them are paid well in good working conditions and the environment and ecology of the land is looked after. Also they help support the local orphange where they provide food etc.

Another positive is all of the rubies, sapphires and spinels are untreated and unheated and are of the highest quality. For more information check out their website: www.rubyfair.com and where I will soon be featured on their 'Bespoke Jewellers' page, showing jewellery made with their stones :-)

From the 22nd August till the 18ct Oct my Cave jewellery will be on show and for sale in the Craft Shop at The Harley Gallery in Welbeck, Nottinghamshire in the '50:50' exhibition - 50 things handmade within a 50 mile radius of The Harley Gallery.

'The Craft Shop sells hand-made products by some of the country's leading makers. Each piece of art and craft is personally selected by the gallery manager Susan Sherrit who spends most of her time researching and travelling to find work by both newly emerging and established makers. From hand-bound leather books to solid silver pitchers, delicate porcelain vases to exquisitely veneered wooden boxes, there is a diverse range of work and prices always available.'
The Harley Gallery is definitely worth a visit with top quality contemporary exhibitions, historical displays, set in beautiful countryside perfect for a walk with also an amazing cafe that serves great food :-)

Also do you have any old silver, gold or platinum jewellery you no longer love? And want to reuse it? I just wanted to let you know I am able to trade in your old metal and use this as credit towards commissioning me to make you a new piece of jewellery. You may also have a favourite gemstone, sapphire or diamond etc you would like reusing in the commission which is also an option...

Lovely feedback from one of my students who attended my 'Ring in a day' workshop on Saturday 9th June, that I just had to share:
"It was a fantastic opportunity to learn a new set of skills, put them into practice and come out with a beautiful new ring - all in one day!"

Thank you Ffion, glad you had a good day & it was worth the train ride up from London :-) It always surprises me just how well the students do & how adventurous they are, when for some it is the first time they have ever made jewellery or worked with silver. This workshop there was a strong focus from students to look at reticulation & granulation which was fun. Photos to come soon...
